Amelia’s Ward fire victims get outpouring of assistance

Melisa McKinnon, owner of a one-story wooden home that was completely gutted by fire on Wednesday afternoon, began rebuilding her home after community members offered significant assistance.

The woman’s father, Nelson McKinnon, during an interview with Stabroek News shared that persons were kind in giving whatever they could afford.

The man said that with the outpouring of assistance received, the family was able to complete the foundation for a new house. They are hoping to begin laying blocks soon.

As a pensioner, he said, it was heartening to see that persons were still kind enough to offer this type of aid, as he recalled that people operated in that manner in days gone by.

McKinnon said that his grandchildren were staying with relatives for now, while his daughter is living with a nearby friend so as to keep an eye on the materials to be used for the construction of the new home.

McKinnon resided at her 1651 Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden home for 13 years prior to the fire.

Six persons were left homeless after a fire completely gutted their wooden one-story Central Amelia’s Ward home.

McKinnon, a 44 year-old security guard attached to Kalibur Security Service, and posted to the Amelia’s Ward Nursery School, was at work when the fire occurred between 2pm and 3:30pm.

Investigations are still ongoing into the origin of the fire.
