A Kilcoy, Corentyne fisherman was fatally stabbed in his village on Monday evening by a former friend and workmate, who was nabbed yesterday while attempting to flee via the Corentyne River.

Dead is Alexander Yhap, also known as ‘John’, 25, a fisherman, of Lot 84 Kilcoy, Corentyne.

Yhap, who sustained three stab wounds, was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he later succumbed while receiving medical attention.

The suspect, 21, also a fisherman from the same village, fled to the sea but was nabbed by investigators who quickly located a boat yesterday morning and went behind him.

According to an eyewitness, Yhap and his wife, Mineisha Chandralall, also known, as ‘Angeli,’ 22, were at a Superbet location in the village, when the suspect arrived just around 7 pm.

The eyewitness said Yhap and the suspect were drinking in separate corners when suddenly an argument ensued between the two.  “Them start fight and then Piken just take out one Rambo knife and stab the boy pon underneath,” the man, who requested that his identity not be released, noted.

The  deceased’s wife yesterday stated that her husband came back from sea on Monday after a short trip. She said they then ventured over to the hangout location when the stabbing occurred around 8 pm.

According to the woman, the suspect has had issues with her husband for a while and they were even involved in a previous altercation during which her husband sustained an injury under his chin.

According to residents, the accused on that day threatened that he would return to end Yhap’s life.

Yhap’s brother, Vishnu Phillip, 16, also a fisher, related that his brother sustained three stab wounds as he pointed to his chest and under his arm.

Phillip explained that  sometime last week they were preparing to go to Chandralall’s mother’s funeral when his brother approached a female resident in the area to plait his hair for $500. However, this caused a dispute with the assailant.

About two days after, Phillip said, the accused visited Yhap’s residence to complain to his wife and another fight ensued. “Me sister-in-law tell him how me buddy na mad and she pick him up and them start fight and me brother walk, go in front the gate and he pull out the Rambo knife and he shove it and me buddy hold am an (hit) he head five time on the post but when me buddy fall he get the mark under his chin and one next boy run in and end up push me and me get two cut a me hand hay so,” the young fisherman recounted.

Yhap was reportedly taken to the hospital after the second fight and he received five stitches under his chin. “The matter go to police but then me buddy say left them man, left da because them work together, them eat from same bowl already and so,” he added.

The young lad said, he never expected that the suspect would return to kill his brother.

Meanwhile, the deceas-ed’s widow yesterday stated that she was in a state of confusion as she recently buried her mother.

The couple share two children, a five-year-old and a two-year-old, and Yhap was the sole provider for the family.
