Man accused of shooting cop at Guyhoc Park charged

The suspect accused of wounding Police Constable Ramsingh last Monday at Guyhoc Park, in Georgetown, was on Friday charged with four offences stemming from the encounter.

Police Commander of Region Four (a) Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean told this newspaper that the 27-year-old suspect, of Meadowbrook Gardens, was charged with discharging a loaded firearm, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without a licence and assault with intent to prevent lawful apprehension.

McBean said the suspect, who is known to the police, remained in custody and is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Constable Ramsingh, who is stationed at the Ruimveldt Police Station, was shot once in his buttocks during an attempt to disarm the accused around 6.40pm on Monday.

He was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and is recovering at home.

At the time of the shooting, the police said, Constable Ramsingh and another rank were on a motorcycle patrol in the community, where they heard a loud explosion suspected to be a gunshot behind them.

They then saw two men, including one armed with a gun, arguing.

As a result, the police said the ranks approached the suspect and Constable Ramsingh attempted to relieve him of the firearm and a scuffle ensued.

During the scuffle, the suspect discharged five rounds, which struck constable Ramsingh. After being shot, Constable Ramsingh managed to disarm the suspect and arrest him with the assistance of his colleague. “The other male with whom the suspect was arguing made good his escape from the scene,” the police said.

The firearm, a .32 Taurus pistol containing a magazine with four live matching rounds and a spent shell in the breech was recovered.
