Four of the eight Success residents who were injured last Friday after a tree fell onto the shed they were under are back on the land and in need of assistance.

One of the injured women, Lucy Moore, during an interview with Stabroek News stated that she was in a lot of pain.

Moore said she suffered injuries to her back, head and neck, as a result of the incident.

The woman recalled sitting under the shed along with other women from the community who were attempting to get a fire going to do some cooking.

She recalled hearing a creaking sound but like the others, she had no time to escape.

Another injured person, Pinkey Benjamin, told this newspaper that she is suffering from a torn ligament in her foot.

At the time of the visit, the woman stated that she was still in pain and showed bruises she also sustained about her back.

She said no one has reached out to them.

Jacienta McCalmon, who was lying in bed during this interview related that her legs were severely injured and was still suffering from pain in her back.

McCalmon who does not recall much of the incident, remembers being under a shed and someone calling out, “Watch a tree coming down!” but by then however, she had already been hit.

Another victim, who was identified as Shevon Bell, said she was struck on her right side from the hip down. That area still remains swollen.

The residents are calling on officials or any public-spirited citizen to visit and help. They stated that no official had reach out to them to offer any form of assistance, however, they are thankful to the private citizen who came and donated food supplies.

Meanwhile, Sabetra Persaud, identified as the resident who was reported as critical, remains a patient in the Intensive Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

The residents are now sharing a one-room bottom-flat of an unfinished house.

Eight of the persons squatting in the canefields at Success, on the East Coast of Demerara, were injured after a section of a large tree fell on a shed under which they were sitting.

Persaud was seriously injured after she was pinned under the fallen tree.

A police report said the accident occurred around 2.10 pm in the canefields of the Success backlands, where several persons were sitting in a makeshift structure on a dam running east to west. It said the tree fell on top of the structure, injuring eight women who were in proximity. They were subsequently assisted by law enforcement officers and transported to the GPH.
