Matthews helps Hobart win

SYDNEY, CMC – A tidy performance from West Indies Women’s all-rounder Hayley Matthews helped Hobart Hurricanes to a seven-wicket victory over Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League on Tuesday.

Matthews, batting at number four, made 20 while New Zealander Rachel Priest hit the top score of 42 and South African Chloe Tryon supported with 36.

Hurricanes ended on 143 for seven from their allocation of 20 overs, after they were put into bat in the contest at the Blacktown International Sportspark.

The Barbadian all-rounder followed up with a miserly spell of two for 19 from her allotted four overs and Belinda Vakarewa took two for 20 from her four overs as the Renegades were restricted to 134 for five from their 20 overs.

It was the third victory for the Hurricanes in the eight-team competition, carrying them to six points and puts them in seventh place ahead of the Renegades.

Matthews came to the crease with Hurricanes on 60 for two in the ninth over and shared small stands with Priest and Tryon to carry the score past 100 before she was caught in the deep in the 17th over to become the second of two wickets for Sophie Molineux.

Tryon hit three fours and one six in her innings and helped the Hurricanes raise 28 in the final three overs.

Matthews returned to capture the wicket of Molineux in the sixth over to put Renegades 27 for two in the sixth over.

South African Lizelle Lee hit 38, New Zealander Amy Satterthwaite made 32 and Courtney Webb added 30 to add beef to the Renegades total and put them within side of victory.

Matthews removed Lee in the 17th over with 42 needed from 23 balls, which was a burden for the rest of the Renegades’ batting.

Matthews is expected to be in action again on Saturday when Hurricanes face Sydney Sixers in a day/night contest at the Sydney Showground.
