‘Big Man Cricket’ tournament shifted to 2021

After a period of deliberation the Big  Man Cricket tournament which was scheduled to commence yesterday has been postponed. According to the organisers Big Man Cricket Guyana, they made an assessment of the situation and decided that  the tournament will be played in 2021.

“Big Man Cricket Guyana has made a full assessment of the current situation and has decided to postpone its highly popular and exciting T25 tournament, which was scheduled to start yesterday, “ a release from the orgsnisers stated.

“The BMC-G deeply regrets having to make such an unpopular decision but, rather than have a disjointed tournament, we made the bold decision to host the tournament when the weather is expected to be better, and the environment healthier,” BMC-G informed via a press release.

It added: “BMC-G had already obtained approval from the Ministry of Health, COVID-19 Task Force and the Minister with responsibility for Sports for this tournament. The GCB had declined approval for this tournament since it clashed with its Over 40 tournament.”

The organisers noted that COVID-19 protocols for the matches had already been put in place. Most of the plans for this tournament had already been completed and will now be shelved until the new year. Twelve teams had indicated their interest in participating in the tournament.

The BMC-G will have to decide on whether to increase the participation from the original 10 teams planned or to allow the 12 teams. Sponsors have also started to come on board and more will be publicised close to the launch of the tournament in January/February 2021, said the organisers.

The competition will be for players who are over 45 years as of January 2021 and will be a 25 overs affair. This signature tournament will be conducted on a round robin basis with two semifinals and a final; it will feature matches at grounds in all the counties- Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice.

The final and the semifinals will be streamed live and there will be live commentary. The committee said it has committed to doing live streaming and commentary at other venues during the preliminary matches, once there is adequate internet services. All matches will be played with pink balls.
