The Ministry of Education (MoE) through the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) is collaborating with owners of television stations across Guyana to assist in the expansion of the Guyana Learning Channel (GLC).

According to a MoE release yesterday, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand along with Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alfred King, and other officers, met with owners of television stations across Guyana at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) Auditorium.

The meeting focussed on the television owners providing equipment and services for the planned expansion of the Guyana Learning Channel (GLC). The MoE’s intention is to invite all persons who are experts in the provision of television services to submit bids to provide these services to the ministry at the appropriate time.

Currently, the Guyana Learning Channel broadcasts on only one channel but the MoE is aiming to have education content aired on six dedicated channels through the GLC so that more content can be provided to all grades for a longer period.

The expansion of the GLC is important since it is one of the main ways the MoE plans to keep its students engaged in a timetabled manner during the coronavirus pandemic when schools are closed for most grades.

Since August, the GLC has extended its reach to Berbice, Bartica, Lower East Bank, Lower East Coast, West Bank Demerara and has resumed broadcasting to Essequibo after being unavailable for two years, the release added.
