Autopsy confirms drowning death of Linden teen

A post-mortem examination yesterday confirmed that 15-year-old Trevon Atkins, the boy whose body was pulled from the Linden ‘blue lake’ on Sunday, died as a result of drowning.

Atkins, who resided at Prosville, Wismar, Linden and was a student of the Wisburg Secondary School, left home with his 17-year-old sister and other relatives to visit the lake sometime around 4.30 pm last Saturday.

A guardian of the deceased, who gave her name as Andrea Lacon, told Stabroek News that neither of the siblings knew how to swim.

She said while she was not present at the lake, she was told that Atkins was holding his older sister on his back in the water but began encountering difficulties after some time.

A relative who saw what had happened reportedly made attempts to rescue the teen but was unsuccessful. Initial efforts to locate Atkins’ body were unsuccessful and it was recovered until the next day.

Lacon said Atkins lived with her for close to four years but left to live with his mother in March of this year. She described him as a loving and respectful person.
