Keron Sandiford, Kishun Puran, Kyle Couchman secure wins

Keron Sandiford, Kishun Puran and Kyle Couchman were the major winners in the season-ending Guyana Chess Federation (GFF) youth tournament which was sponsored by the Region Four Regional Democratic Council (RDC). 

The online tournament was held Saturday and the U-20 division was won by St Stanislaus College’s Sandiford with four points. Marian Academy’s Johnathan Stephney was second while Saints’ girl, Jessica Callender placed third. 

In the U-16 category Queen’s College’s 15-year-old Puran was the winner from a 17 person field.

Puran, St Stanislaus’ female player Italy Ton Chung and Queen’s College’s Aniyah Couchman, ended with five points each but, after the tiebreak system was implemented, Puran gained the nod from Ton Chung and Couchman in that order.

In the U-12 section there were 30 participants with Marian Academy’s  Couchman emerging champion with six wins and one draw against Nicholas Zhang for a total of 6.5 points. 

Queen’s College’s Maliha Rajkumar was second with six wins and one loss while School of Nations’ Zhang placed third with five wins and one draw. In what would be their season ending tournament, the GCF thanked all the parents, players and sponsors for their support in 2020 as they look forward to the new year. The presentation of prizes was done at the RDC boardroom on Monday.
