COVID fatality figure at 160, 45 new cases recorded

Guyana yesterday recorded a new COVID-19 fatality along with a number of new cases of which more than half were recorded in Region Ten.

The Ministry of Health announced yesterday that as of December 21st another person died as a result of the virus which increased Guyana’s COVID-19 deaths to 160. The 160th fatality was identified as a 73-year-old man from Region Five who died while receiving care at a medical facility.

Meanwhile, some 45 new cases were recorded on Tuesday which increased the total number of positive confirmed cases in the country to 6,216. Of the cases, three were recorded in Region Four, eight in Region Seven and 34 in Region Ten which has seen a number of spikes in their cases over the past few weeks.

They came as a result of some 161 more persons who were tested which increased the total number of persons tested to date to 36,296. As a result there are now 666 active cases, 31 of which are in institutional isolation while 635 are in home isolation. The number of patients at the COVID-19 intensive care unit has decreased to 5.

Some 15 persons are now in institutional quarantine facilities even as some 16 more persons have recovered from the virus thus increasing the total number of recoveries in Guyana to 5,385.
