Knife-wielding Rose Hall man threatens ex in police station

A Rose Hall, Corentyne man yesterday escaped after he threatened his ex-wife at the New Amsterdam Police Station, while being armed with two knives.

Commander of Region Six, Senior Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, yesterday told Stabroek News, that the man will appear today at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court to be charged with threatening behaviour.

In response to queries concerning the matter, the commander said it was reported to him that the incident happened just outside of the New Amsterdam Police Station and the man was subsequently arrested on the main road in New Amsterdam.

Based on information gathered, the man had broken into the woman’s house and had fallen asleep which caused her to head to the New Amsterdam Police Station where she filed a report against him.  The woman then proceeded to work where she noticed the man, who is also employed at the same location, entering the compound.

She hurriedly left work and boarded a car to return to the station, but the man armed with the two knives, then entered the same car.

According to a source, a taxi driver then arrived and whipped out a cutlass and assisted the woman by transporting her to the station.

However, while there, it is alleged that the man rushed into the station where he began threatening the woman.

The source added that officers attempted to apprehend the man but he escaped into the town.

However, a search was launched and the man was arrested shortly after.

Meanwhile, according to the source, the two knives and a suspected poisonous substance were retrieved from the man when he was arrested.

The source noted that the date of the intended attack (yesterday’s date) was stamped on one of the knives, and the man while in custody has been threatening to commit suicide.

Commander Ramlakhan said yesterday that he has ordered his ranks to keep a close eye on the man and to ensure he does not come in contact with anything that he could use to harm himself.
