Over 70 households in Little Diamond, on the East Bank Demerara, were affected by flooding on New Year’s Eve due to a breach of a river defense close to the area.

This was disclosed by the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) Senior Response Officer Captain Salim October, who said the breach occurred last Thursday night.

At that time, according to the CDC’s Facebook page, 40 families were affected. Following further assessments that were conducted, that figure was revised to between 70 and 80 households were affected.

The CDC in collaboration with the area’s Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC) distributed cleaning and sanitizing agents to the affected families on New Year’s Day.

When contacted yesterday, October said that when the CDC visited the area on Friday, parts of the community were still inundated. He noted that because of terrain of the area, it is difficult for floodwater to recede at a fast rate.

However, he added that the CDC had not received no reports of any further flooding as a result of the breached river defence yesterday.

The CDC continues to monitor the situation, he added, while also noting that remedial work on the river defence is being done by BK International
