37 COVID-19 cases confirmed from testing for new school term

Thirty-seven persons in the public school dorms across Guyana have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

This was disclosed by Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony yesterday during the COVID-19 daily update.

Anthony told the Department of Information that 19 students, 10 teachers and eight staff members at the dorms received positive COVID-19 test results.

He also said that these persons are from locations in different regions but he did not further elaborate. This newspaper was told that all the persons have been isolated and are being monitored by the MoH.

For the reopening of schools, Education Minister Priya Manickchand had announced that all dorm students would be tested before returning as three grade levels – 10, 11 and 12 – have been permitted to return to physical classrooms.  It was confirmed to this newspaper last Saturday that testing started over the weekend.

Anthony said that the students who tested positive would be kept in isolation and provided with worksheets to continue learning.
