Three held over property damage after Blankenburg gas station scuffle

Police have arrested three men who allegedly damaged a construction worker’s car following a scuffle at a gas station at Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara (WCD) on Friday night.

A Guyana Police Force report stated that around 7 pm on Friday, 49-year-old Harricharran Alfred, a resident of Zeelugt Housing Scheme, decided to stop by the Blankenburg gas station to buy gas for his car. However, as he was driving towards the gas pump, he realized that his path was blocked by three men, identified as Rondell Lyte, Edwin Nunes and Anthony Hendricks, all of whom were drinking alcohol. He subsequently honked his car horn in hopes that they would let him pass.

However, Lyte, police said, became annoyed and threw a glass bottle towards the car. The bottle landed on the front window glass of the car, damaging it. Alfred stepped out the car with his two sons and confronted Lyte, which resulted in an argument and then a scuffle.

According to the police, this led Nunes and Lyte to arm themselves with a cutlass and two knives, respectively. As a result, Alfred and his sons ran towards the Den Amstel Police Station, where they made a report.

The police subsequently went to the scene and when they arrived they noticed that back and front window of the car, two headlights and the four side windows damaged, with fragments of them seen on the road.

The report noted that several persons who were there were questioned and based on the information the police received, the trio was arrested and escorted to the Leonora Police Station where they were placed in custody.

The parties involved in the scuffle were seen with visible injuries and were issued with medical certificates to seek medical attentions. The suspects were escorted by the police to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.

Investigations are still in progress, the police added.
