Security guard who impersonated CANU officer in custody

A security guard is now in police custody after he allegedly pretended to be a CANU officer when he assaulted a vendor on Tuesday.

The police in a press release said that the 37-year-old security guard, of Haslington, East Coast Demerara, was apprehended by police after the vendor, Ryan Gonsalves, 26, of Meckdeci Housing Scheme, Georgetown, made a report of the incident to the Alberttown Police Station.

According to the police, the alleged incident occurred on Tuesday at about 13:45hrs at Robb Street between Alexander and Bourda Streets, Georgetown. The police said that Gonsalves was at his stall when the guard approached him in a white Toyota Premio. The police said that the guard identified himself to Gonsalves as a Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit officer. He then proceeded to pick up handcuffs and grabbed Gonsalves by his shirt. But Gonsalves resisted him and escaped. He then made a report of the incident to the police.

A police rank who was on duty in the area at the time was alerted and managed to apprehend the man. He was searched by the police and a pair of metal handcuffs were found. The police are currently investigating the matter.
