A Good Intent two-storey house went up in flames in the early hours of yesterday morning, while its occupants, a family of four, were still asleep.

Renita Joseph, during an interview with Stabroek News said that she discovered the fire as it was approaching a bedroom she occupied.

Joseph after observing the fire said she quickly picked up her 3-year-old daughter who was sleeping in the same room and alerted her husband who was at the time in another bedroom with her 10-year-old son.

The woman explained that the fire started in the front section of the hallway, on the upper wooden flat of the house where they slept.

Joseph disclosed that they were able to use the back door as an escape route but were unable to save anything in the home, since the heavy wind contributed to the fire spreading rapidly through the house.

The family, after making their way out of the burning home, immediately alerted neighbours and subsequently broke a gate in order to push their vehicle out of the yard. The keys were left in the burning house.

Stabroek News was told that fire tenders arrived at the scene of the fire shortly after being summoned and did their best to control the fire, but it was too late to save anything.

Joseph explained that the wreckage from the upper structure of the house fell to the lower concrete half damaging everything.

The woman said, while she cannot give a direct estimate of her losses, she stated that it would amount to millions since she recently did some renovations to the home after occupying it in 2017.

Meanwhile, the woman who is also a teacher at Belle West Primary and a final year University of Guyana student, stated that she lost all of her work in the fire.

She explained that her research as well as her teaching materials and her son’s school supplies were all damaged in the fire.

Presently the family is residing with family members.

No one was hurt and there has been no word yet on the origin of the fire.
