The Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has set up a permanent COVID-19 testing site in south Georgetown at the East La Penitence Health Centre.

The head of the unit placed at the site, Dr Dirk Walker, during an interview with Stabroek News stated that the purpose of this initiative is to reduce the workload of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The site began operating on Thursday. Walker noted that apart from testing, the site will be used to issue clearance certificates to persons who have tested positive and have completed their quarantine.

The doctor also explained that a schedule is currently being worked out but the idea is to operate from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 9 am and 3pm.

He encouraged persons experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or anyone who has come into contact with someone who tested positive, to come out and be tested. Results are generally available within two or three days.

Presently there are mobile sites located on the East Coast of Demerara and on the East Bank of Demerara.
