Woman accused of home building scam gets bail

A woman accused of defrauding persons by pretending that she could assist in the construction of low-income homes was on Friday released on $180,000 bail after denying the charges laid against her.

Nazia Persaud was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to her.

Persaud is accused of collecting $265,000 from Monica Wills at Sandeman Place, Brickdam, with the intent to defraud, by falsely pretending that she was able to construct a home for Wills.

It is alleged that she committed the offence  between  November, 2019 and the end of February 2020.

It is also alleged that Persaud in December, 2019 at Sandeman Place, Brickdam, received a total of $122,000 from Quincy Nelson under the pretense that she was able to construct a home for his mother, Karima Nurse.

Additionally, it is alleged that on November 26th, 2019, at Sandeman Place, Brickdam, Persaud, with the intent to defraud, received $200,000 from Deborah Caesar under the pretence that she was able to construct a home for her. It is further alleged that she obtained an additional $40,000 from Caesar on January 20th, 2020.

According to the prosecution’s case, the accused, who was said to be a member of Eclectic Foundation, was successful at convincing the victims that the organisation was able to build low-income houses, allowing for them to benefit.

As a result, it is contended that the victims subsequently handed over cash to Persaud to undertake the work but no action was taken.

Reports were made to the police and Persaud was charged.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently granted bail. She is expected to make her next court appearance on February 26th, 2021, when the matters will be called again.
