Burnt body identified as Enmore pensioner

The burnt body of a man found on Monday near Huaxin Supermarket at Enmore, East Coast Demerara, has been identified as an Enmore pensioner, 72-year-old Mathura Etwaru.

The deceased was identified by his son, Navin Mohabir of Annandale Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.

A suspect,  Marco Seudatt also known as ‘Bissoon’, 22, a labourer, of Lot 175 Fourth Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara has since been taken into custody.

The Guyana Police Force had previously reported that the body was found by Gopaul Seralall, a 52-year-old painter of Hope, East Coast Demerara.

According to the statement, at about 8.16 am Seralall discovered the body lying on the ground at the northern side of the building.

The police after reviewing footage from CCTV cameras installed at the supermarket and nearby buildings, discovered that at approximately 2.46 am, Etwaru and another man were having an argument. The footage further showed the man holding onto Etwaru before pushing him to the northern side of the fence.

The assailant was also seen picking up empty cardboard boxes as he headed to the same area where he had earlier pushed Etwaru and at about 3:12 am he lit the cardboard boxes afire. He subsequently rode away in a westerly direction.

Police commander of regional division 4 ‘C’, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Siwnarine, when contacted by this newspaper, stated that the suspect was arrested at his residence on Tuesday morning and taken to the Cove and John Police Station, where he was interviewed. Seudatt remains in police custody and is expected to be charged shortly.

Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination conducted on the remains of Etwaru revealed his cause of death as severe burns about the body and compression of the neck.
