Driver hurt after fuel tanker topples at Mahdia

A 35-year-old driver was injured on Sunday morning after a fuel tanker crashed while descending a hill in Mahdia, Region Eight.

Injured is Magiva Akeem Charles, a resident of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway.

The accident occurred around 11.30am on the Konawak Trail, Mahdia.

Charles was the driver of motor lorry, GVV 3461 which was also carrying a 21-year-old porter.

According to the police, enquiries revealed that the motor lorry was descending a muddy hill along the Konawak Trail, when the rear of the lorry began to slide.

As a result, Charles lost control of the vehicle, which continued to descend the hill and careened off the southern side of the Konawak bridge and into a creek.

Charles was pinned in the driver’s seat of the motor lorry. He sustained injuries about his body including his head.

The porter escaped unhurt. With assistance from public-spirited citizens, he managed to rescue Charles.

Charles was taken to the Mahdia District hospital and was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

His condition is listed as serious.
