LONDON, CMC – Colchester United interim first-team coach Wayne Brown has backed Guyana international Callum Harriott, who netted twice in Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Carlisle United, to continue his goal-scoring form for the remainder of the English League Two season.
Harriott’s second-half brace, in which he followed up an equaliser from the spot with a fine long-range strike, secured Colchester’s first win in 15 matches.
It was the eighth goal of the season for Harriott, 26, who had a loan spell at the club in 2015-16 before rejoining on a two-year contract in September 2019 – two months before he scored his first goal for the Jaguars in Guyana’s 4-2 win over Aruba in a CONCACAF Nations League match.
“The lads were great. We had to weather the storm as such and we knew that they were going to come out of the blocks and they’ve blown teams away this season in the first 20 to 25 minutes of games and found themselves a couple of goals up,” Brown said.
Of Harriott’s winning goal, he added: “It was a fantastic strike and we know that Cal can produce that.
“He’s got that in the locker and we’ve seen it many times this season and many times when he was here before, a few years ago.
“That will do his confidence the world of good and, hopefully, he takes that on, for the remaining part of the season,” added Brown, who managed Harriott during his first spell in caretaker charge of the club.
Colchester had fallen behind to Jon Mellish’s first-half strike at a foggy JobServe Community Stadium, but battled back to win and are now 10 points above the relegation zone.
