Accused in robbery, assault on biker freed after victim asks court to dismiss case

Two men accused of robbing and assaulting a motorcyclist have walked free as the victim asked a city court to dismiss the charge.

The two men charged were 53-year-old Khemraj Shaffie, of Hadfield Street, Lodge, Georgetown, and 21-year-old Daniel John, a labourer of West Front Road, West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown. The men, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

However, the victim requested that no further action be taken regarding the matter and that his motorcycle be returned to him. As a result, the case was dismissed.

According to a police report on the attack, on Saturday night last, the victim was riding his motorcycle along Vlissengen Road and had stopped at the traffic lights situated at the Homestretch Avenue junction.  One suspect then jumped onto the rear of the motorcycle, demanding that the victim ride to the nearby D’Urban Park, which he did. When the victim got there, he was pounced on by three other perpetrators who relieved him of his motorcycle, which was valued $250,000, a Samsung cellphone valued at $25,000, and $1,500 in cash.
