Noise nuisance in 4th street Prospect continues unabated

Dear Editor,

I am a retired health care professional. I served in the health sector for 24 years and am presently employed with a private company as an industrial nurse. My neighbours and I in 4th Street Prospect on the East Bank of Demerara have been enduring for many years noise nuisance from an unlicensed auto body repair work shop which also has been in existence for over twenty five years.  There are banging sounds, fumes and loud music; the neighbours said enough is enough and reported this workshop to many places including the NDC, police station, OPR, EPA, ministry of health, office of the president. The noise nuisance team did visit a few times. Eventually in 2015 the owner was charged by the Environmental Protection Agency and placed before Justice Ramlall who asked him to cease all operations. This he did but only for a short period, he continued to operate but within a much quieter environment, until recently.

Since the PPP took over, every single night as my sister and I retire to bed, the owner would play music very loud, sometimes he even light squibs that startles us. Within the past weeks this matter has been reported three times to Providence Police Station, and to Inspector Jagnandan at Ruimveldt Police Station who promised to send a patrol but to date I am still waiting. I have a sister who suffers from a congenital medical condition which stems from the central nervous system; I also have a history of medical problems. Where are the relevant authorities who can look into this matter? Because of this noise nuisance a few older folks had to migrate and leave their families behind. I also had cerebral palsy where my entire face collapsed due to the main facial nerve and after months of injection I had a replace and with this amount of noise it could send anyone crazy. I am appealing to the authorities to step in and let us have some peace.

I think every citizen in this country is entitled to a peaceful life, am I asking for too much? No weekday, weekend or holidays I can get some rest, not daytime nor night time. No weekday/weekend or holidays you can experience what is rest. Then there is a family friend of theirs who also join force with them – one would play music in the day and when the other comes home he takes over. I wish someone could offer me a fowl pen to live in as this has becomes very unbearable.

Sincerely,

Chandra Mangal
