Earlier this week Diana Chapman dropped another power single, “Stage”, which she has submitted for selection in the finals of the Soca Monarch Competition. “Stage” is already playing on airwaves and a video is set to be released next weekend.

“I’m confident the song will be selected for the finals,” Diana said of “Stage”, which was written by her Linden peers Lil Colwyn and Brandon Harding, who also is hoping to make the Soca Monarch finals.

Diana explained that she was not sure she would enter the competition as she had writer’s block and could not come up with a song. Though she has had songwriters compose for her in the past, she usually writes her own songs for competitions.

However, when Diana walked into the studio recently Lil Colwyn was working on “Stage” and she loved it immediately. Without hesitation, she asked him for the song, and he agreed. Harding, who was also in the studio, put the finishing touches to the composing of the song. It was certainly teamwork, Diana pointed out.

“When I walked in and heard the song, right away I felt that song is a winning song,” enthused the singer. “The song is really about wanting to be on stage again after being in quarantine for so long. It talks about missing the stage, missing fetes, being without fans, missing the fun.”

“Stage” was recorded by Code R3d Records in Linden. At present, “Stage” is being played on HJ 94.1 Boom FM, and Mix 90.1 FM. Meanwhile, the video for the song will be done by Jason Copeland, also known as Director Dex, and then it will be released on social media and registered to be available on all online musical platforms.

Diana is also hoping to compete in the Calypso Monarch Competition. Prior to COVID, the local Soca and Calypso competitions would allow up to 20 participants from which the semi-finalists and subsequently finalists would be chosen. Given the current situation, however, there will be no semi-finals. This year’s competition also does not allow for backup dancers and as such, artistes will be required to work harder on their creativity. They will be allowed to use props in their videos.
