Pinned infant died of ‘traumatic asphyxia’ – autopsy

A post-mortem examination has determined that four-month-old Kaylee Williams, who was found pinned under one of her father’s feet in the wee hours of Sunday morning, died of traumatic asphyxia.

The examination was conducted on Thursday by Dr Nehaul Singh.

Williams, of Annandale, Essequibo Coast, died at approximately 1.55 am after she was found pinned on her parents’ bed.

Police, in a statement, had said that the baby’s mother, Trecia Atkinson, 17, woke up to breastfeed her when she observed her husband Troy Williams’ right foot on Kaylee’s chest. At that time, a whitish substance was coming out of Kaylee’s mouth and she was motionless.

The mother told the police she immediately roused the infant’s father and they rushed her to the Suddie hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was examined by police and no mark of violence was seen.

Meanwhile, Commander of Region 2, Superintendent Crystal Robinson, when contacted stated that a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) seeking advice on the matter.

On Wednesday Commander Robinson and other ranks of Region Two donated a hamper containing groceries and toiletries, along with monetary contribution to the parents of the deceased child. The police will also be assisting with the burial of the child.
