Grove shopkeeper stabbed to death after gambling row

Trevor Alfred, 49, shopkeeper of Nazarene Street, Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was fatally stabbed yesterday after a gambling row.

The police said that that the victim and the suspect were gambling at the Rocky Shop located in Second Street, Grove Squatting Area, when they ended up in an argument over money.

The police say they were both put out of the shop by the owner and the argument intensified with the pelting of bottles.

“The two armed themselves with knives and started to fight causing the victim to fall to the ground where the suspect dealt the victim several stabs.

“The victim managed to escape and ran into another street with the suspect in pursuit. They both ended up in a culvert causing other injuries”, the police added.

The victim was taken to the GPHC by taxi and was pronounced dead on arrival.

The suspect, a 36-year-old mason, was also taken to the GPHC for treatment and has been admitted a patient under police guard.
