Three women die of COVID, 60,000 persons vaccinated

The Ministry of Health yesterday said that three women who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have died even as just over 60,000 persons have now been vaccinated.

The latest fatalities are a 41-year-old female from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and a 65-year-old woman and a 63-year-old woman, both from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). They died while receiving care at the ministry’s medical facility. This takes the total number of deaths from the pandemic to 255.

Meanwhile, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, advisor to the Minister of Health yesterday said on his Facebook page that 60, 174 persons have now been vaccinated.

“I went to Anna Regina today to  join our sisters and brothers in Region 2 in their first outreach for COVID-19 vaccination. The team administered more than 300 vaccines it was Region 2’s biggest single-site performance since the vaccination rollout started on March 8. I am grateful to the Dharmic Kendra Center for hosting us so graciously. I am grateful to the Mayor and Councillors of the Anna Regina Town Council, to the pandits, pastors and imams who helped mobilize people. The young people did a marvelous job. Looking forward to Tuesday’s outreach in Region 2 in the Good Hope/Pomona NDC. There were other outreaches today. Of note is the magnificent outreach in Mon Repos Block 8 and CC which administered 354 first doses today. These outreaches helped us to pass a milestone today – 60000. Our total presently for first dose = 60,174”.

Yesterday’s dashboard from the Ministry of Health revealed that there were 105 new cases of the virus and 15 persons in the ICU. This number in the ICU is one of the highest ever seen.

Meanwhile, Ramsammy also said that immunisation against COVID-19 will be boosted with the scheduled arrival of 30,000 more vaccines today.

“Our President has personally been engaged in vaccine procurement. A shipment of 30,000 vaccines will arrive on Mon-day. I’m honoured I have this privilege to play a role in one of the most important developmental initiatives in our history as a country,” Ramsammy stated in a separate post on Facebook.

He did not reveal which COVID-19 vaccine will be arriving but Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony recently said that the government is expecting the second batch of the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccines this week.

Speaking about a recent outreach in Berbice, Ramsammy said: “At Albion I saw young people, cricketers, school teachers, I saw GuySuCo managers, and other people going out and ensuring their community is made safer by ensuring people are vaccinated. But I also saw our nurses and doctors going beyond the call of duty to vaccinate everyone that came”.  He added that mobile teams were deploy-ed to the Port Mourant and New Amsterdam markets where more than 600 persons were vaccinated.

“In Leonora, according to Ramsammy, more than 400 people were vaccinated while in Annandale and Little Diamond, there were more than 100 people at each site. At the Ministry of Health, there were 300 persons.

“Since we started this vaccination campaign, this was the most successful,” he said.
