Meeting today to discuss next month’s Olympic Qualifiers in Argentina

A virtual meeting is planned for today relative to the Americas Olympic Boxing qualifying event.

The online meeting which starts at 09:00hrs local time, will be exclusive to the national  boxing ferations and National Olympic Committees of the Americas region and will use the Zoom platform.

Next month, Buenos Aires, Argentina is scheduled to play host to the Olympic Qualifiers for boxers in the Americas.

However, cases of COVID-19 continues to surge in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which could perhaps put the Olympic future of Guyana’s elite quartet of boxers, Keevin Allicock, Colin Lewis, Desmond Amsterdam and Dennis Thomas in jeopardy.

After the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) shelved plans for its boxers to go to the Youth Boxing Championship in Poland citing health and safety concerns, a similar stance may be taken at the Olympic Qualifiers if the situation worsens.

If the local boxers are unable to attend the qualification process or if it is cancelled altogether, it may kayo any chance of them representing the Golden Arrowhead at the Games which will be hosted in Tokyo, Japan this summer.

A source told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the qualifiers which is being organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) could be shifted to another territory or cancelled all together.

The source also stated that a ranking system may be employed to determine the pugilists competing in Tokyo. That system could potentially put boxers in the Region at a distinct disadvantage.
