A minibus operator was yesterday charged with causing death by dangerous driving charge.

Leon Kyle, 30, of Lot 222 Lamaha Street, Kitty, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on the charge of causing the death of Keith Alexander McGarrell.

He was not required to plead to the charge and was ordered to return to court on May 11th, 2021.

The police had reported that Mc Garrell, 72, of Church Street, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, was struck down along Avenue of the Republic, in the vicinity of Demerara Fire Insurance Company.

Kyle, who at the time of the accident was operating minibus BWW 7191, had been proceeding south along the eastern carriageway of Avenue of the Republic, where he claims that Mc Garrell suddenly attempted to cross the road and ended up in the path of the minibus.

The police said Kyle applied brakes to avoid a collision but the right front side of the minibus collided with the pedestrian. As a result of the collision, Mc Garrell fell onto the roadway and suffered injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious state by the driver and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He subsequently died without regaining consciousness.

A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver but no trace of alcohol was found in his system.
