Man, 22, hangs self after attacking teen, sister on Essequibo River – police

A 22-year-old man ended his life yesterday after he attacked a 17-year-old girl while she was travelling  home on the Essequibo River.

The name of the deceased was not revealed by the police.

According to the police, the attack occurred at around 11.45 am in the vicinity of Fort Island while the victim and her siblings were traveling home from Hubu Koker.

During the journey, police reported that the now deceased man approached in his boat and jumped into the victim’s boat. He was armed with a cutlass.

As he entered the victim’s boat he said “all the time you does fool me” and proceeded to chop the girl on her head and hand. The victim’s sister then pushed the attacker overboard. However, the 22- year-old managed to pull himself up and fired a chop at the sister injuring her on her left hand.

The siblings however managed to push him overboard for a second time causing his cutlass to fall into the river. Unarmed, police said the man swam to his boat and made good his escape.

The victims managed to make it to their Fort Island home where their family was informed of what had transpired.

It was at that point that the 17- year-old was rushed to Parika Koker and then to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where she was examined by a doctor on duty and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a stable condition.

The matter was reported to the Fort Island Coast Guard and they went in search of the attacker.

During the search, Coast Guards spotted the attacker’s boat at Morasi, Essequibo River, which is located opposite Fort Island.

As the ranks searched for the 22-year-old they found his body dangling from a tree. The matter was immediately reported to the police and upon arrival they retrieved his body and rushed him to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

His body is currently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination.
