COVID death toll rises by five, 51 new cases

The Ministry of Health yesterday said that five more persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have died. This takes the total number of deaths from the pandemic to 289.

The latest fatalities are a 79-year-old male from Region 3 (Essequibo Islands–West Demerara), a 70-year-old female from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), a 46-year-old male from Region 6 (East Berbice-Corentyne) and a 72-year-old female and a 46-year-old male from Region 4 (Demerara-Mahaica). They died while receiving care at the ministry’s medical facility.

Meanwhile, 51 new cases were reported which increased Guyana’s total number of positive confirmed cases to 12,754. These came after some 300 more persons were tested for the virus, thus increasing the total number of persons tested in the country to 117,690.

According to the Ministry’s dashboard, cases were recorded in seven of the country’s ten regions. One new case each in Regions One and Five, four in Region Two, 19 in Region Four, 16 in Region Six and five cases each in Regions Seven and Nine. There are 1,571 active cases in Guyana, 72 in institutional isolation and 1,499 in home isolation.

Ninety-four more persons have recovered as of yesterday thus increasing Guyana’s total recovered cases to 10,880.
