A vagrant died yesterday after being hit by a truck while begging at the intersection of Avenue of the Republic and Regent Street.

The deceased man, who is yet to be identified, was reportedly killed at about 5.45 pm. When Stabroek News arrived at the scene, the man was seen lying on the road as the police conducted their investigation. Eyewitnesses informed that the man had been begging near the vehicles that had stopped for the traffic lights.

Stabroek News was told that the man, who was homeless, was trying to get back to the side of the road when the light turned green but that as he avoided a car which sped off in the southerly direction, he moved into the path of an oncoming truck and was hit from behind.

The eyewitnesses added that the impact of the truck hitting the beggar cracked the windscreen of the truck. He was then crushed by the very vehicle. The truck driver immediately stopped after realising what had happened.

The police were summoned and the body was subsequently transported to the Lyken Funeral Home.
