The Indian Action Committee (IAC) says it has lodged a complaint with the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) over “derogatory” remarks made by APNU+AFC MP Amanza Walton-Desir.

In a statement on Saturday, the IAC said having listened to recent comments made by Walton-Desir, on a social media video interview titled, “Politics 101”, and which was hosted by Dr. David Hinds, it is of the firm view that, in the context of the country’s politics, there is no ambiguity that the said comments were directed at Indo-Guyanese.

“The IAC therefore forthrightly condemns in the strongest possible way and rejects such comments which it believes are repugnant, describe that group of Guyanese as being mentally enslaved, intellectually incapable and inferior to supporters of the Party she represents. Her tirade, which was demonstrative of her blatant disrespect to the Guyanese she wantonly and deliberately targeted, is totally counterproductive to efforts to foster national unity”, the IAC stated.

The IAC said it believes that such comments have no place in society and are unbecoming of someone who holds the esteemed position of a Member of Parliament.

Having viewed her comments as racially insensitive and offensive, the IAC said it has  lodged an official complaint with the ERC and has brought the matter to the attention of the Speaker of the National Assembly.
