Two held after attack thwarted on overseas-based Guyanese at No. 11 Village

Two men were arrested on Friday evening after they attempted to invade the premises of an overseas-based Guyanese at Number 11 Village, West Coast Berbice.

According to the police, one of the suspects was shot during his arrest and he is presently hospitalised under police guard.

The Guyana Police Force in a statement on Saturday explained that around 9.15 pm on Friday, an overseas-based Guyanese woman contacted the Fort Wellington Police Station and reported that she and her family members were in their yard socializing when they observed an unidentified male jump into her backyard while another male was trying to jump into the yard from another fence.

The police then responded but were told that the two had already made their escape.

However, over one hour later, ranks on patrol received a call from one of the intended victims, who informed him that both men had returned and attempted to gain entry again into her yard and one of them had been apprehended.

The man was handed over to the police along with a metal pipe he had in his possession.

The statement added that based on intelligence received, the ranks went in search of the second suspect, who was seen running into a yard causing the police to give  chase.

The suspect, realizing he was cornered, turned around and began advancing menacingly towards the police rank with a then unknown weapon in his hand, according to police, who said a shot was discharged in his direction. The suspect then turned around and attempted to scale the fence of the yard.

The rank then continued to give chase and apprehended the suspect, who was armed with a piece of wood with several nails in one end.

The suspect, who sustained a gunshot injury, was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was admitted in a stable condition.
