Digicel Guyana is paying the fees for students of the Sophia Night School who are sitting the upcoming Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations. In a press release, Digicel said over 30 students will benefit from the partnership between the company and the Sophia Night School.
In addition, three laptops were donated to be used by students without a device to attend virtual classes.
Sophia Community Development Association coordinator Orin Nelson and programme director Leroy Adolphus accepted the donation at a ceremony at Digicel’s headquarters in Kingston. Simone Pierre, the Chief Commercial Officer of Digicel, speaking with some of the students, noted, “Education opens the door to numerous opportunities.” Pierre further urged them to study hard since these exams could be the stepping stone to attending the University of Guyana. One of students commented how grateful she was for the unexpected refund as she is a single mother. “Getting this money back is such a surprise and will go a far way for my son. Thank you Digicel for this you made us very happy,” she was quoted as saying.
The Sophia Community Development Association is a community-based non-governmental organization that provides programmes and activities aimed at promoting youth empowerment and education as vehicles or mechanisms for overcoming or reducing the prevalence of crime and violence in the Sophia community and its surrounding environs.
The goal of the CSEC programme is to provide young adults who were unable to graduate from high school with the opportunity of completing their CSEC examinations.
