Salesman, two others arrested over staged robbery

An Associated Brands Industries Limited driver/ salesman and two accomplices are now in police custody after staging a robbery on Friday afternoon to pilfer money from the company.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the 26-year-old driver/salesman of ‘A’ Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was arrested after he made a false report of a robbery to the police. His accomplices were also arrested, the police said.

In a release, the police stated that on Friday around 2 pm at Stabroek Market Square, two delivery men were delivering products from Associated Brands Industries Limited and receiving money for the products.

While the deliveries were being made by his colleagues, the driver/salesman stayed in the enclosed tray of the vehicle and counted the day’s sales. The police said that the man initially alleged that two bandits entered the vehicle through a door which had been left open and demanded that he hand over the money.

The man claimed he complied and handed over the money and the men then made good their escape, going in a northern direction along Water Street.

However, the police said that CCTV footage which filmed the encounter was reviewed and the footage did not support the story which the victim reported.

The police then confronted the man and he allegedly confessed that he had concocted the story and that he had taken the money himself. The police further said that the man assisted by identifying his accomplices, who he arranged to collect the money from him.

As a result, a party of policemen went to Regent Street, where one of the identified co-conspirators was apprehended with a red haversack on his back. The bag was searched and $502,630 in cash was found. The man was asked how he got the money and he said it was given to him by the suspect.

The police were also able to make contact with the third suspect and the three men were then arrested and escorted to the Brickdam Police Station. They were told of the allegation, cautioned and gave written statements. The investigations are still ongoing, the police reported.
