Woman struck down on Rupert Craig Highway

A twenty-eight-year-old woman is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital after she was struck down on Saturday night by a driver under the influence of alcohol

At the time, she was trying to cross the road in the vicinity of Conversation Tree Road along the Rupert Craig Highway. The injured woman has been identified as Shevorna Rhyna.

According to a police report, it is alleged by the driver, forty-seven-year-old Lloyd Harris of Quamina Road, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara that about 11.30 pm on Saturday he was driving his car #PYY 962 east along the northern drive lane on the northern carriageway of the Rupert Craig Highway and whilst in the vicinity of Conversation Tree Road at the traffic lights, the signal indicated that he could go so he continued east onto the junction where the traffic lights were. He further alleges that upon doing so, he saw Rhyna run from the southern side of the same carriageway and end up in the path of his vehicle. The pedestrian as a result fell onto the road suffering injuries about her body. She was subsequently picked up by EMT personnel who transported her to the GPH where she was admitted as a patient suffering a broken left leg and injuries to her head. She is said to be in a stable condition.  Harris was arrested and a Breathalyzer test conducted on him showed that he was over the prescribed alcohol limit at 142 micrograms.
