Army reservist accused of assaulting cops

An army reservist was arrested last Friday after he reportedly assaulted police officers who were conducting a mobile patrol.

The Guyana Police Force reported that a party of police were on mobile patrol at about 6.15 pm at the Pouderoyen tarmac, West Bank Demerara, where they made contact with the man.

The man was verbally abusive toward the police by use of expletives, prompting a warning about his behaviour but he did not stop using the loud tone of voice, which caused persons to gather at the scene.

The police said a rank then attempted to arrest the reservist but he allegedly began assaulting the rank, with several chucks and cuffs. A sergeant, who was also patrolling with the police, joined another rank in rendering assistance to the rank, who was being assaulted. The police said that the man then started cuffing and chucking the two other police officers. This caused one of the ranks to suffer injuries to his mouth.

The ranks were able to subdue the man and arrest him. He was taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station, where he was placed in custody pending charges.

The policemen were seen and examined by a doctor on duty at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where medical certificates were obtained, the police added.
