Landlord accused of setting fire to Better Hope property to evict tenant

A landlord in his attempt to evict a tenant allegedly set his Better Hope, East Coast Demerara home on fire on Sunday.

In a press release, the police said Mumtaz Ali, 56, allegedly committed the crime due to a conflict between himself and his tenant.

The police stated that Ali served the female tenant a lawyer’s letter to remove from the premises but she failed to comply.

Police added that on Sunday the tenant and her children were selling food when they observed smoke emanating from their house.

It is alleged by the tenants that they saw the landlord running from the house into the neighbour’s yard.

The fire department was called and managed to put out the fire, containing the damage only to the house.

Police did not indicate whether Ali was taken into custody.
