Golden Jaguars set to depart today for Gold Cup playoffs

The Golden Jaguars, the senior men’s football team, will depart local shores today to compete in the first round of the 2021 Gold Cup playoffs against Guatemala July 3 at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

This was disclosed by a source close to the federation who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

According to the source, “The team is scheduled to leave tomorrow [today]. The flight will occur in the morning. The foreign contingent will meet the other members over in Florida.

“The team is attempting to play two friendly matches as part of their preparation for the Guatemala fixture. It has not been confirmed to date as to who Guyana will play against so the team is unsure at the moment if the matches will occur”, the source added.

Meanwhile, the GFF officially announced on Monday their 23 member roster for the event. The entire selection was confirmed via an official correspondence. The final squad reads: Goalkeepers Akel Clarke, Shawn Adonis, Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Defenders Marcus Wilson, Matthew Briggs, Liam Gordon, Terrence Vancooten, Nicholai Andrews, Reece Greenidge, Kevin Layne, Midfielders Nathan Moriah-Welsh, Javier George, Daniel Wilson, Job Caesar, Curtez Kellman, Stephen Duke-McKenna, Forwards Connor Kurran-Browne, Keanu Marsh-Brown, Omari Glasgow, Kelsey Benjamin, Sheldon Holder, Trayon Bobb, and Emery Welshman.

Notable absentees include Sam Cox, Anthony Jeffrey, Callum Harriott, Neil Danns, Terrell Ondaan and Pernel Schultz. Meanwhile, the technical staff is led by head coach Marcio Maximo, with Charles Pollard and Wayne Dover serving as Assistant Coaches. Eon DeVieira is the Goalkeeping Coach.

Similarly, Duane Saunders and Quacy Paddy are the Team Doctor and Physiotherapist respectively, while Wilson Toledo is the Fitness Coach.

On the other hand, Faisal Khan is the Head of Recruitment whilst Rawle Adams and Naseya Brewster are the Operations Manager and Assistant Operations Manager correspondingly.

If successful in the first round, the Golden Jaguars will face-off with the winner of the Guadeloupe and Barbados encounter on July 6th for a berth in the group stage of the tournament.

The Golden Jaguars, in their recent outings were dumped out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, after concluding the group campaign with a record of three losses and a win. Guyana lost to Trinidad and Tobago (4-0), St. Kitts and Nevis (3-0) and Puerto Rico (2-0), with their only victory occurring against the Bahamas (4-0).
