La Parfaite mother of three succumbs after stabbing by partner

Omela Singh, the La Parfaite Harmonie woman who was left critical after she was stabbed by her estranged partner, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday evening.

Hours later, the man, identified as Onkar Singh, 49, of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was discovered dead in the Canal Number One Conservancy and it is suspected that he took his own life.

Omela, a 27-year-old mother of three, died while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital at 7.45 pm on Sunday.

According to a police report, following the attack, the police found the man’s abandoned car at the Canal Number One Conservancy.

Further enquiries by the police revealed that the suspect had contacted a son following the attack on Omela and confessed to killing her. Several checks for the man on Sunday had proved futile but around 9am yesterday the police found the man lying motionless in the conservancy. No marks of violence were observed on his body. Although it is suspected that he took his own life, the police have since launched an investigation surrounding the circumstances of his death.

Ravi Singh, the brother of Omela, said she was at home with her children when she was attacked by the man, who beat and stabbed her. His sister, he said, had been in a relationship with the man for seven years. Onkar was a father of six, including Omela’s three children.

Ravi said that almost two months ago, his sister, who was living with the man and their children at Diamond, ended their relationship and she and her children moved in with her mother at an apartment building in La Parfaite Harmonie. The man added that Onkar knew that their mother was usually away at church on Sunday when he turned up at the home. However, on the day in question, their mother had gone to visit a relative at Diamond.

The man added that he learnt from neighbours in the other apartments yesterday when he visited that because of their sealed housing units, they did not realise what was happening in Omela’s apartment. Whatever little noise they heard, Singh noted, they assumed it was her children playing. It was not until after Onkar was fleeing that they heard screams coming from the apartment and rushed to see what was happening.

Ravi said his sister was said to have been attacked in the presence of her children.

He further said that the dead woman’s eldest child informed him that Onkar had called earlier to say that he was bringing supplies for their two-year-old sibling. The man was said to have turned up at the home with a female relative who asked that Omela open the door for the supplies, at which point he rushed in and attacked her.

Ravi added that he learnt from their mother a few days ago that the man had called and threatened to kill her as he blamed her for Omela leaving him.

Omela was said to have been a victim of domestic abuse by the man and the two had an ongoing matter in court. She was reportedly supposed to have returned to court yesterday for a restraining order against him.
