Woman, 37, among four new COVID fatalities

The Health Ministry on Friday reported four more COVID-19 fatalities, including a 37-year-old woman, increasing Guyana’s death toll from the virus to 477.

In a press release, the ministry stated that three of the deaths occurred in June. A 61-year-old woman from Region Nine succumbed on June 28, while an 81-year-old man from Region One and a 37-year-old woman from Region Four both died on June 30.

The fourth fatality reported yesterday was identified as a 68-year-old-man from Region Nine, who died on July 1.

Meanwhile, some 89 new cases of the virus were also confirmed by the ministry on Friday, thus increasing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to date to 20,231. These new cases came from 1,385 more tests that were done and as a result increasing the total number of tests done to date to 191,263.

According to the dashboard’s regional distribution of COVID-19 cases, the majority of new cases were reported in regions Four, Six and Ten, with 30, 22 and 10 cases, respectively.

There are now 1,545 active cases, 97 of which are in institutional isolation, while another 1,448 are in home isolation. Some 15 persons are now patients at the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit even as some 85 more persons have recovered. The total number of recovered cases in the country now stands at 18,194.
