Driver on station bail after Annandale collision

One of the drivers involved in last Thursday’s collision at Annandale, East Coast Demerara, has been released on $20,000 station bail.

The accident occurred when a truck and a car collided.

Rafman Juman, 35, the truck driver of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, told this newspaper that he was released on bail around 11.30 am on Friday after the police were informed that the 33-year-old driver of the car, HC 7123, of Hope West, Enmore East Coast Demerara, was discharged from the hospital.

According to the Guyana Police Force, at about 12.50 pm on Thursday, the two vehicles collided along the Annandale Public Road. Juman, who was driving truck #GWW 6076, was driving along the southern side of the road when it is alleged that the driver of the car, who was proceeding east along the northern side of the road at a fast rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle.

As a result of this, the car collided with the right side of the front of the truck. Both vehicles were damaged while the driver of the car also suffered injuries about his body. He was reportedly rescued by Juman and public-spirited citizens. He was in a conscious state when he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted.   A breathalyser test was conducted on Juman and no trace of alcohol was found on his breath. However, a notice of intended prosecution was served on him, the police said.

Juman told Stabroek News that he was heading to Georgetown to work when he saw the speeding car. He said he suspected the vehicle would get between him and the traffic but he did not anticipate the collision until the vehicle was relatively close and he had no way of avoiding the crash.

The driver said that he did not expect the impact to make his truck hit the median the way that it did.

He also disclosed that he is still paying for the truck.
