Two sisters, who Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) officers say had cannabis amounting to 518.7 grammes, in their possession, were on Friday refused bail.

The two women, 24-year-old Shontell Evans, and 19-year-old Phimhera Evans, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on a date in July, at Lot 169 James Street, Albouystown, George-town, they had in their possession, 518.7 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. The two women who were represented by attorney-at-law Everton Singh-Lammy, pleaded not guilty.

According to the police prosecutor, the CANU officers were acting on information when they went to Lot 169 James Street, Albouystown, where the two women were the only occupants at the time. The officer conducted a search during which the narcotics were discovered. He objected to them being released on bail because of the amount of narcotics found

However, Singh-Lammy argued that the two women denied ownership of the illicit substance. He said that the women claimed that the narcotic was in a barrel and that Shontell, who is six months pregnant lives there with her boyfriend. He further explained that the younger sibling was simply visiting her sister when they were arrested. The women were however remanded until August 20.
