Sophia teen remanded on armed robbery charge

A Sophia teenager, who police say was caught red-handed after robbing a man of a phone in a knife-point attack, was yesterday remanded to prison on an armed robbery charge.

The accused, William Kowlessar, 18, of Lot 452 ‘C’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who read the charge to him.

It is alleged that Kowlessar on July 30, 2021, while at Croal Street, Georgetown, being in the company of another and armed with a knife, robbed Brandon Mohan of a $23,000 cellphone.

He was remanded to prison and is expected to make his next court appearance on August 11, 2021.

The police allege that one the day in question Mohan and his brother were walking on Croal Street in the vicinity of the Sophia bus park, where Kowlessar, in the company of another, approached them and whipped out a knife.

The two brothers were ordered to hand over their belongings after which the teen and his accomplice escaped.

However, Kowlessar was later captured by a police officer who gave chase behind him and arrested him. The victim’s phone was found in his possession.
