A Rural Constable is currently in custody after he was involved in an accident that left another man suffering from internal bleeding.

The Guyana Police Force yesterday reported that Quacy Jacobs, 35, of Lot 54 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, who is a Rural Constable attached to the Lodge Community Policing Group, was driving a Home Affairs Ministry vehicle at the time of the accident.

The victim of the accident, the now hospitalised Kareem Abdul-Jabar, 53, of Lot 2 `CC’ Eccles Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was the driver of a jeep.

According to the details provided by the police, on Thursday at 10.05 pm, the accident occurred at Regent Street, between King and Wellington Streets, where the left front tire of the vehicle Jacobs was driving had a blowout. He was proceeding east along the northern driving lane of Regent Street with two other Rural Constables at the time.

The police said that Jacobs alleges that he lost control of the vehicle when the blowout occurred and the vehicle then spun and ended up colliding with the front of the jeep. Abdul-Jabar had been sitting inside of the jeep at the time.

As a result of the collision, both vehicles were extensively damaged and Abdul-Jabar received injuries to his chest and ribs, the police said. The police further said that Abdul-Jabar was picked up in a conscious condition by public-spirited citizens and taken to the St Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty. He then he took self-discharge. However, his relatives subsequently took him to Woodlands Hospital, where he was further seen and examined by a doctor on duty and was later admitted at 3.30 am to the facility as he was suffering internal bleeding. His condition is regarded as stable, the police said.

Meanwhile, a breathalyser test conducted on Jacobs found no trace of alcohol in his system. A notice of intended prosecution was served on him while he remains in custody assisting.
