Reggae/R&B singer/songwriter Amelia Thomas who goes by stage name ‘Melody’ has been exploring other genres of music and dropped a Dancehall single dubbed “Better” on August 1.

The song speaks of someone who is just realizing they’re not in the right relationship and could do better.

Melody penned the song after she was contacted by the production company GT Youths which is based both here and in the US and run by Guyanese. The company has created a new rhythm called ‘The Cold World Rhythm’ and wanted various Guyanese artistes to record songs on it. Melody is the only woman on this project, which also sees the involvement of another local recording studio, Code R3d, from Linden.

“They came to me and said, ‘we love your vocals and maybe you should try jumping on some Dancehall and see how it goes’. I was the only female artiste they extended the rhythm to and I basically took a week and wrote the song and sent that back to them,” said the singer.

Asked how she feels about being the only woman singing on the project, Melody laughed and said she did not want to boast but “when a queen sits, she kind of sits alone.” She added that most of the other projects she has taken up have also been dominated by men.

Melody said she plans on exploring more of the genre, adding that she is not about to limit herself to only Reggae and R&B.

Melody’s last song release prior to this one was mid last year. However, she has been helping other local artistes perfect their craft and get their songs produced.

At the moment, Melody is working with Rough Cut Production to release upcoming songs. She will also be collaborating with Lindener Brandon Harding on an Afro-beats single, another genre she looks forward to dabbling in.

“Better” has been released on Spotify, iTunes and all other music streaming platforms.
