Guyana’s Under-10 chess players who participated in the FIDE Online Rapid World Cup Cadets & Youth Champ-ionship 2021 expressed themselves handsomely against the creme de la creme of the U-10 community of chess players worldwide.

Pre-eminent among the select group of U-10 chess players was Aquilani Swaminadha, who scored 5 points (a win = 1 point, a draw = ½ point, a loss = 0 point) and placed 125th among the 200-plus participants. Julian Mohabir scored 4 points and placed 164th; Nicholas Zhang, 3 points, 198th and Jacob Frank McDonald, 2 points, 212th.

Sakline Mostafa Sajid, 1770, of Bangladesh, who was FIDE-ranked 70 as he entered the championship, placed first, quite an achieve-ment. However, in juxtaposition to this occurrence, Swaminadha possessed no FIDE rating, was ranked 212, but captured a respect-able five points and placed 125th.

Meanwhile, Polish Grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda was crowned champion of the 2021 World Cup in Sochi, Russia. In the final game, Duda defeat-ed Sergey Karjakin in a 30-move game. He played unbeaten in the 24-day event and knock-ed out world champion Magnus Carlsen who eventually placed third. Duda has now cemented a spot in the next FIDE Candidates Tournament.
