A man was yesterday sentenced to 20 months behind bars after a court heard that he chopped his sister with a cutlass because she was going to report him to the police.

Kevearl Sandiford, 24, was sentenced by Chief Magis-trate Ann McLennan after he admitted to a wounding charge.

It was alleged that he wounded Dante Fraser on August 6, at Wismar, Linden.

The brother and sister reside at separate houses in the same yard and Fraser alleged that Sandiford smokes marijuana and is in a habit of arming himself with a cutlass and issuing threats to kill her mother.

The police say that on the day of the attack Fraser went home from work and was told by her father that he was assaulted by Sandiford. The woman then suggested that they report the matter to the police but the man became angry and armed himself with a cutlass and chased her. She ran and fell to the ground and Sandiford went over to her and fired several chops at her. Fraser used her hands to block him and she received chop wounds to each finger on her right hand. She also received a chop to her lower back.

Sandiford then fled.

Fraser ran out to the road and she was assisted by public-spirited persons, who took her to the Wismar Police Station. She made a report of the matter and was escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex, where she was examined by a doctor, treated and sent away.
