Cyclist critical after riding into car

A 56-year-old pedal cyclist was critically injured on Friday night after he was involved in an accident along the Met-en-Meerzorg, West Coast Demerara public road.

Harrychand Dhanraj, a resident of Prem Nagar East, Met-en-Meerzorg, sustained injuries to his head and a foot during the accident, which occurred around 7pm.

According to a Guyana Police Force report, enquiries revealed that a car was proceeding along the public road when Dhanraj allegedly rode out of Water Pump Street, Met-en-Meerzorg onto the public road.

Dhanraj then rode across the public road in a zigzag manner and ended up into the path of the car, the police said.

As a result of the impact, he fell onto the roadway and received injuries.

Dhanraj was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.

He was later transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he is admitted in a critical condition.

The driver of the car, who has been identified as a 23-year-old resident of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, was taken into police custody while the investigation continues.
